GUSTAV W. KROLLMANN (1888-1962)

NORTH COAST LIMITED IN THE MONTANA ROCKIES. 1929.

39x28 3/4 inches, 99x73 cm.
Condition A- / A: minor repaired tears at edges. Framed.

Austrian-born Krollmann came to the United States in 1923 and settled in Minneapolis where he taught at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He designed a series of posters for the Northern Pacific Railroad using images "that displayed a strong sense of modeling and a richness of color" (Zega p. 83). Here, the North Coast Limited is shown going over the Bozeman Pass in the Montana Rockies. The train is pulled by a mighty Alco (American Locomotive Company) 4-8-4 engine, which went into service for Northern Pacific in the late 1920s. Zega 104.
