GUSTAV W. KROLLMANN (1888-1962) NORTH COAST LIMITED IN THE MONTANA ROCKIES / NORTHERN PACIFIC. 1929.
39 3/4x29 3/4 inches, 101x75 1/2 cm.
Condition B+: replaced upper right corner; repaired tears and creases in margins and image; loss at lower left edge; water stain at lower right edge.
The Northern Pacific's North Coast Limited route was established in the 1880s. Here, engine #2607 (no doubt a personal favorite of Krollmann's as it appears in several of his posters) is steaming across Montana's Mission Valley. Krollman designed a series of posters for the Northern Pacific Railroad using images "that displayed a strong sense of modeling and a richness of color" (Zega p. 83). Few other biographical details are known about the artist except that he was of Austrian descent and that he settled in Minneapolis where he taught at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Zega 104.
