GUSTAVE BAUMANN
Strangers from Hopi Land.

Color woodcut 1920-21. 277x250 mm; 11x10 inches, full margins. Signed, titled and numbered "II 6/125" in pencil, lower margin. With the artist's ink stamp, lower right. A very good impression of this extremely scarce print.

According to Acton, Baumann (1881-1971) became interested in Pueblo and Hopi dolls and figurines in the early 1920s during his first years living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This print is the first woodcut that illustrated his growing doll collection, and "judging from the number of times he submitted it for exhibition, he was proud of this print." Acton 102.
