GUSTAVE CIMIOTTI
Rockport, Maine.

Oil on canvas board, circa 1940. 400x505 mm; 15 3/4x20 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto, and inscribed with the artist's name and "Rockport" in chalk, verso. Acquired directly from the artist by the current owner.

Cimiotti (1875-1969) was a first generation American artist whose family had immigrated from Italy in the mid-1800s. In his teens, Cimiotti was a talented musician and prodigious draughtsman. He studied abroad at the Académie Julian in Paris, but never fully adopted French Impressionism like so many fellow American artists of his day. Cimiotti had a studio in New York for decades at 51 West 10th Street, where Winslow Homer and William Merritt Chase also worked, and it is with the bold, colorful style of these American masters that his work shares a greater affinity.
