Gustave Louis Jaulmes was a successful classic French painter who exhibited in the major salons and was commissioned to paint many decorative murals. The Salon d'Automne, which was founded in 1903 by Georges Rouault, André Derain, Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet, was organized as an alternative to the conservative policies of Paris' official Salon. In the 1920's, they attracted a strong following of avant-garde artists and others outside of the mainstream, including many painters from Montparnasse. Jaulmes' poster, with two women intertwined in wreaths and garlands of flowers, is a good example of the French Art Deco style that would triumph at the 1925 Arts Decoratifs exhibition.
