Oil on wood panel, 1916. 635x508 mm; 25x20 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right recto. With an unfinished portrait of a woman in oil, verso. Ex-collection Lloyd Goodrich, former Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Born in Brooklyn, in 1884, Guy Pene du Bois was raised in a well-to-do, former New Orleans family. His father, Henri Pene du Bois, was a noted literary critic and Guy grew up in a household immersed in artistic and literary culture. After dropping out of high school in 1899, Guy became the youngest student at William Merrit Chase's school. He also studied under J.C.Beckwith, Frank Dumond, Robert Henri, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and later, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere, with Théophile A. Steinlen in Paris.
