Additional Details

This work on paper likely depicts a view of the Bois de Meudon observatory park close to Gwen John's Terre Neuve studio. Cecily Langdale, in Gwen John (1987), notes that similarly drawn landscapes can be seen in the background of drawings done of Breton and Meudon children from the late 1910's. John settled in Meudon in 1910, at 29 rue Terre Neuve; her studio, the street, and her surroundings appear in many of her works. This physical transition coincided with a spiritual one; John started to study Catholicism in Meudon. Sketches from church that are from the same period as the present work, were originally pencil drawings from life to which John added delicate, translucent washes of thinly applied color in her studio.
