Head of Dancer is a wonderful example of Gwen Knight's rather enigmatic oil painting. In the 1950s, Knight studied dance with members of Martha Graham's dance company in New York. At the same time, as her husband Jacob Lawrence received national acclaim, Knight pursued her own figurative painting without gallery exposure.
