Gilpin is known for her photographs of Southwestern landscapes as well as the Navajo and Pueblo people. Her knack for photography began at an early age, and she continued to study the art formally in New York from 1916-1917. While working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Gilpin photographed Georgia O'Keefe in her studio. Many of the resulting well-known portraits of O'Keefe are housed at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. However, the present lot is an exception.
