Goulet, Lorrie (b. 1925)
Malachite Sculpture.

Diminutive figural sculpture depicting a softly abstracted female figure with her arm bent over her head, the pose following the natural bands of striated color in the rock, on a square mahogany stand, the stone itself 6 1/2 in. tall; 9 3/4 in. with the base; accompanied by the 2007 exhibition catalogue, Lorrie Goulet, Sixty Years of Sculpting.

Known for her sculptural work in stone and wood, Goulet favors female figures of strength that represent solidity, spirituality and femininity. She studied with Josef and Anni Albers at Black Mountain College, and had her first solo show in 1948. Her work is held in many public collections and has been exhibited at many museums and private galleries, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Whitney Museum, and the Corcoran Gallery. She is regarded as an important early sculptor working in a field historically dominated by men.
