Grabhorn Press. Mandeville, John & Valenti Angelo, illus. (1897-1982)
The Voiage and Travaile of Sir John Maundevile, Kt.

San Francisco: Grabhorn Press for Random House New York, 1928.

Limited edition, folio; copy number 12 of 150; illustrated with 34 hand-painted and illuminated initials in red, gold, and blue, and 31 uncolored woodcuts by Valenti Angelo; bound in original publisher's brown morocco-backed wooden boards, spine lettered in blind; housed in a gilt-lettered cloth clamshell box; 14 1/4 x 9 1/4 in.

This pristine example of perhaps the finest Grabhorn Press production was printed from the 1725 English edition of a 14th-century manuscript purporting to be the travelogue of Englishman Sir John Mandeville. It follows Mandeville's supposed travels from England through the Holy Land, onto Egypt, the Middle East and Asia. The work is generally accepted as fictional, since many of the descriptions are highly fantastic. Nonetheless, it influenced and inspired many readers beginning in 1357, including Christopher Columbus.
