Gregory XVI, Pope (1765-1846), Dedicatee.
De Executiva et Inspectiva Ecclesiae Potestatibus Disputatio, Manuscript on Paper.

Rome, circa 1831-1844.

Small folio presentation manuscript on wove paper consisting of approximately 370 pages, written in a neat secretarial hand, dedication signed by Johannes Baptista Tagliaferri; bound in full parchment over boards with gilt-tooling on boards and spine and Gregory XVI's arms tooled in gilt on both board; a trifle soiled; with the bookplate of the Pacific School of Religion pasted over John Howell's bookplate inside front board, 12 1/2 x 8 in.

Gregory XVI was an ultramontanist who worked to strengthen papal power over civil power throughout his papacy. The text was written by Tagliaferri and may never have been published separately. It concerns the importance of the church's executive and investigative powers.
