Additional Details

A small archive dealing with the life and death of Deborah Cesar, an ex-slave and servant to Reverend C. H. Edgar. His "Remarks made at the close of a sermon on the Rest remaining for God's people occasioned by the death of Deborah Cesar" shows an uncommon reverence for the woman. In the sermon he details the refusal of the rite of burial for Deborah by the trustees of the Easton cemetery. In speaking of the goodness of Deborah, the pastor says, "She was a member of the church, and although born a slave and never more than a servant all her life, she in that lowly capacity adorned the doctrine of God her Saviour. Many a professor, of another color, of ample wealth and of elegant culture and commanding social postiion, has not been as helpful to the ministry as was Deborah." A typed transcription is included.
