Sizes vary, approximately 25x35 inches.
Condition varies, generally A-: creases in margins. Paper.
Rothholz was born in Germany and arrived in England in 1933. A student of art with desire to become a commercial artist and designer he got his first commission after the war from the General Post Office. He also worked for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, whose wartime roster of artists was a veritable who's-who of the best British modernist designers of the era. From his studio in Richmond he also executed private commissions such as the 1948 London Olympics program, major sporting events at Wembley, and designed the El Al check-in counter at Heathrow airport. Each of these posters is an enlarged view of a folding brochure explaining the security, accessibility and other qualities of the banking activities of the Post Office Savings Bank. Done in three bold, basic colors the brochures are presented as approachable, eye-catching and have been intriguingly rendered in a manner that almost make them seem to be architectural installations. See International Poster Annual 1948-9 nos. 111 and 129.
