H. BUCKLE BATH / FAMOUS THROUGH THE CENTURIES. Circa 1930.
40x49 inches. Waterlow & Sons., London.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and image; creases in margins; horizontal fold.
An ancient Roman city, first settled in 60 BC, Bath has indeed been "famous through the centuries," primarily for its baths and thermal springs, but also for architecture. The Great Western Railway "promoted [Bath] for the curative qualities of its waters, as well as its unique historical interest and Georgian architecture" (Railway p. 43). That Buckle was trained as an architect is amply on display here in a fanciful historical recreation of courtly reception in the ancient city.
