H. GRAY (HENRI BOULANGER, 1858-1924) PETROLE STELLA. 1897.
51x39 1/2 inches, 129 1/2x100 1/4 cm. Courmont Freres, Paris.
Condition B+: tears and repaired tears at edges, some affecting image; creases and punch holes in margins; vertical and horizontal folds; tape on verso. Paper.
In the late 1890s, Gray designed a number of posters which were substantially different from most other posters being designed at the time. They each presented scantily-clad women, or winged faeries, afloat in the cosmos with the products being advertised. The progressive designs exuded more of a science fiction and fantasy feeling than anything close to the prevailing Art Nouveau style; with Phoebus, Cycles Sirius and Cycles Briliant advertising bicycles, and this image for lamp oil. DFP-II 421, Affichomanie 116.
