H. GRAY (HENRI BOULANGER, 1858-1924) PÉTROLE STELLA. 1897.
50x38 1/2 inches, 127x97 3/4 cm. Courmont Frères, Paris.
Condition B: replaced top and side margins; repaired tears, creases and restoration in image.
In the late 1890s, Gray designed a number of posters which were substantially different from most other posters being designed at the time. They each presented scantily-clad women, or winged faeries, afloat in the cosmos with the products being advertised. His progressive designs for Phebus, including Cycles Sirius and Cycles Brillant advertising bicycles and this image for lamp oil, exuded more of a science fiction and fantasy feeling than anything close to the prevailing Art Nouveau style. DFP-II 421, Affichomanie 116.
