Egyptian Pharoah in the 12th Century B.C., Ramses II was known for his prodigious offspring (some accounts claim he had as many as 100 children), his tremendous architectural legacy and the impressive size of his tomb (the largest ever uncovered by Egyptologists). This dramatic, colorful, mysteriously-shaded image is most likely taken from the statue of Ramses at Luxor. The U. A. R. (United Arab Republic) was formed between Syria and Egypt in 1958, Syria left in 1961 and Egypt kept using the name for another 10 years.
