Zernack was an illustrator and advertising art designer who opened his own private art school in Berlin in the 1920s. His creativity is on display here, advertising a wine exposition in Koblenz (the center of the Rhine Valley, and home of some of the best German wines). Wine posters are very rare, and almost none of them achieved as high a graphic quality as this image. By and large, wine posters usually offer a realistic or nostalgic vision, making Zernack's truly modernist image quite exceptional. He depicts two stylized grape-pickers carrying a large bunch of grapes in front of a large sun. His impeccable typography is well balanced and laid out beneath the image.
