Over 30 theater set and costume designs for stage productions in New York during the 1950s and 60s; this lot also includes a small envelope of fabric and ribbon swatches, and 16 pages of notes containing measurements, tailoring notes, personal contacts and doodles. Various media, including pen, ink, crayon, gouache, and watercolor on different papers, some with fabric swatches pinned to sheet. Designs vary in size, the largest sheets measuring approximately 305x227 mm; 12x9-inches.
George's quick hand, attention to detail, and his senses of color and humor are evident in these studies from his personal collection. The majority of costume designs are for Shakespeare's "A Winter's Tale" and "Julius Caesar," and Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest." The set designs are for Philip King's "See How They Run." Notes and other sketches concern performances including Abe Burrows and Richard and Marian Bissell's "Say, Darling," Richard Rodney Bennett's "The Mines of Sulphur."
