Born in Hamburg, Max Halberstadt married Sigmund Freud's youngest daughter, Sophie, with whom he had two sons. In the 1930s, as conditions in Weimar Germany deteriorated, Halberstadt and his family moved to South Africa, where he operated a photographic studio in Canada House.
