HALE WOODRUFF (1900 - 1980)
Autumn Study.

Oil on press board, circa 1931-33. 400x505 mm; 15 1/2x20 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto. Titled in oil, verso.

Provenance: private collection.

This Impressionist landscape of fall colors was made very soon after his return from France to teach at Spelman College in Atlanta in 1930. The artist continued to make landscapes of his new environs - the rural hillside surroundings of Atlanta. There are several known Woodruff landscapes of fall colors, including "Autumn in Georgia," 1931, in the Paul R. Jones Collection, University of Delaware. Though this could be a French scene, it was painted on a board with "Made in the USA" stamped on the back.
