HALE WOODRUFF (1900 - 1980)
Cinque Exhorts his Captives.

Oil on canvas, 1973. 1015x1220 mm; 40x48 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto. Signed and dated in oil on stretcher bars verso.

Provenance: commissioned from the artist by Mr. Robert H. Jordan and Mrs. Millicent Dobbs Jordan, Atlanta, GA; thence by descent to the current owners. Photocopies of letters from Hale Woodruff to Mrs. Millicent Dobbs Jordan in reference to this commission are in the Woodruff Archives at Atlanta University.

This striking, large painting is one of the few known versions of one of Hale Woodruff's mural subjects in a private collection. Woodruff revisited his famous Amistad mural paintings, particularly The Mutiny Aboard the Amistad, in this later commission. The 1939 murals were his first major commission, three large panels for a new library being built at Talladega College in Talladega, AL, where Woodruff had been invited to teach an art history course. Woodruff also revisited his Card Players painting of 1930 with two later versions in 1978.
