This lush composition by Hale Woodruff is an early example of his landscape series--a late career series began just before of his retirement from New York University in 1967. Woodruff's abstraction incorporated organic forms from nature with an earthy palette in the late 1960s - describing landscape and natural phenomena within the idiom of Abstract Expressionism. Woodruff's related Green Landscape, circa 1968, is in the collection of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, Washington, DC. Other known works in this series are Primordial Landscape, 1967, Blue Landscape, 1970, in the collection of Kenkeleba Gallery, New York, andRed Landscape, circa 1970, in the collection of the Studio Museum in Harlem. Amaki/Brownlee pp. 186 and 190.
