HANS BURKHARDT
Reclining Female Nude.

Color pastels on cream laid paper, 1969. 660x508 mm; 26x20 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right recto.

Throughout his career, Burkhardt (1904-1994) had a consistent style that he altered little over the decades. Burkhardt's representational abstractions in pastel on paper remained a conduit for his artistic expression. His bold and lively color was likely inspired by the work of Arshile Gorky, Hans Hofmann and even Willem de Kooning, a fellow pupil under Gorky. He relocated to Southern California in 1937, where he immediately lamented the loss of his close knit circle; he did, however, associate with some transplanted Surrealists that included Man Ray, who most certainly encouraged his expressive sensibilities.
