HANS BURKHARDT
Study in Blue.

Color pastels on tan wove paper, 1981. 610x460 mm; 24x18 inches. Signed, dedicated and dated in pencil, lower center recto. Ex-collection the artist; gift from the artist to the current owner.

Throughout his career Hans Burkhardt balanced his dedication to painting and drawing with his humanitarian causes. Even more consistent was his style that changed little over the years. From Figure in a Landscape (lot 476) to Study in Blue, some 40 years apart, Burkhardt's representational abstractions in pastel on paper remained a conduit for his artistic expression. His bold and lively color, almost entirely monochromatic in the present drawing, he have been influenced by Arshile Gorky, Hans Hofmann and even Willem De Kooning, a fellow pupil under Gorky. He relocated to Southern California in 1937, where he immediately lamented the loss of his close knit circle; he did, however, associate with some transplanted Surrealists that included Man Ray who most certainly encouraged his expressive sensibilities.
