HANS FALK (1918-2002) DAS PLAKAT. 1949.
50x36 inches, 127x91 cm. J.C. Muller A.G., Zurich.
Condition A-: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds.
Hans Falk is one of the rare cultural exceptions who was both a succesful contemporary artist and an important graphic designer. He studied art in Lucerne, and went to Zurich in 1938 where he worked with Walter Herdeg, the editor of Graphis, and had full training as a graphic artist. His posters, which were almost exclusively for social and cultural events, were highly praised and awarded top prizes and awards. Falk's posters are just as respected and sought-after as his paintings. Das Plakat, advertising a poster exhibition ("a mirror of our times") is one of his most famous posters, with his unique vivid drawing style and the use of his favorite colors of red and yellow. It depicts an exuberant parrot looking down at a poor grayish hen, obviously an allegory for the colorful poster dominating a black and white engraving. Margadant p. 105, Schweiz p. 63, Weill 537.
