Color etching and aquatint on Arches, 1953. 113x260 mm; 4 1/2x10 1/4 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 19/100 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Lacourière, Paris. Published by Berggruen, Paris. A superb impression. Schmücking 31.

Hartung (1904-1989) began experimenting with abstraction as early as 1922, when he was only 18 years old. In 1926, he was exposed to modern masters such as Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso at an international art exhibition in Dresden; he was so inspired that he moved to Paris, where he resided until 1932, and then settled permanently after World War II. In the years leading up to the war, Hartung's work had a strong Cubist influence. Works from the post-war period, such as the current lot, became increasingly abstract, combining graphic elements with patches of black and color to produce the calligraphic quality that is typically associated with this phase of his career.
