HANS HOLBEIN THE YOUNGER (CIRCLE OF) (Augsburg 1497-1543 London) Moses with the Tablets of the Ten Commandments.
Pen and black ink and gray wash on cream laid paper. 292x137 mm; 11 1/2x5 3/8 inches. The contors finely pricked with the needle for transfer. Gothic P with a small coat-of-arms and a cross watermark (similar to watermarks from the South German and Austrian region from 1525 to the second half of the 16th-century).
A scarce example of a working drawing. The execution of the design was probably not meant to be 3e-dimensional, but was intended either for a wall decoration or, more likely, for a glass painting.
The iconographic concept probably also included a figure of St. John the Baptist, the 2 figures representing the old and the new order.
