Founded in 1947, Icelandic Airlines (Loftleidir) had their first commercial transatlantic flight to New York in 1948, and began regular service to North America in 1952. In 1973 Loftleidir merged with Iceland's other airline, Flugfelag Islands, to form Iceland Air.
