When Alexey Brodovitch became Art Director at Harper's Bazaar, one of his first decisions was to hire Cassandre, replacing such artists as Erte. From 1936 until the war, Cassandre designed a total of 42 different covers. No longer in his geometric Art Deco stage, which lent itself to his posters of trains and ships, Cassandre shifted focus to the world of fashion, leaving his mechanical period behind and inventing a symbolic language based on Surrealism.
