HARRY HERMAN WICKEY
Standing Woman.

Bronze, circa 1940. 330 mm; 13 inches (height). Incised with the artist's signature, lower right on the base.

Provenance: Private collection, New York.

Born in Ohio, Wickey (1892-1968) studied at the Detroit School of Fine Arts and served in France during World War I before moving to New York where he set up a studio. He first worked as a printmaker and was associated with the Ashcan School, but switched to sculpture in 1938 after etching acids hurt his eyesight. Wickey was an influential educator, teaching at his own school until 1928, and thereafter at the Art Students League mentoring many young artists such as Cecil Bell, Don Freeman and Harry Sternberg.
