HARRY HUDSON RODMELL (1896-1984) FRENCH LINE / TO NEW YORK. Circa 1930.
40x25 inches, 101 1/2x63 1/2 cm. Ronald Massey, Victoria Street.
Condition B+: creases and abrasions in margins and image; punch-holes in top margin. Paper. Framed.
An impressive and rare Art Deco representation of the Lafayette and Champlain. Although not sister ships, the vessels were quite similar in appearance. Rodmell, of whom little biographical information exists, worked for many different shipping companies; The French Line, Shaw Savill & Albion, Norddeutscher Lloyd , Swedish Lloyd and the Bergen Line. The majority of his posters are realistic depictions of ships and landscapes. Here, in a style more graphic than painterly, Rodmell wonderfully incorporates the New York skyline and the French tri-color into the image.
