Multiple Faces.

Acrylic on canvas, 1969. 787x589 mm; 31x22 inches. Signed and dated in acrylic, lower center.

Provenance: estate of the artist, New York.

This is only the second painting by printmaker Hartwell Yeargans to come to auction. This lively but balanced composition shows the artist's interest in pattern and abstraction. The flat tones of his acrylics are similar to the effect achieved with his first experimentation with screenprinting also in 1969. The artist was working in New York City that year as both a printmaking instructor at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and Stuyvesant High School. His work was also included in the important exhibition Afro-American Artists, 1800-1969 at the Philadelphia Civic Center.
