The 1876 presidential election is one of the few elections in U.S. history in which the winner received fewer popular votes than the challenger; this fact was especially important in 1876, because in this election, the highest-ever percentage of eligible voters went to the polls. The hostility evoked by the controversial election contributed to bringing about the end of the era of Reconstruction.
