HAZEL SHEARER THOMAS GRAY (1906 - 1999)
Untitled (Still Life with Fruit).

Gouache and watercolor on wove paper, circa 1950. 610x457 mm; 24x18 inches. Signed in pencil, lower right.

Provenance: the artist's estate; private collection.

Born in South Orange, NJ, Gray moved to Brooklyn and studied at New York University. She taught in the New York City school system for 40 years while studying painting at the Pratt Institute and the Brooklyn Museum School. She also spent summers at Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard where she knew Loïs Mailou Jones--both women's families were among the earliest African Americans to have residences there. This painting is from a group of works that was rediscovered since her passing, and were exhibited in July 2010 at Treasures Found, an exhibition at Romany Kramoris Gallery in Sag Harbor, NY.
