HEINRICH VOGTHERR I and HANS BURGKMAIR II
Armored Soldiers and Patrician Families of Augsburg.

Bound volume with 122 (of 156 ?) etchings, 1545. Each approximately 210x145 mm; 8 1/4x5 3/4 inches, wide margins. Very good impressions of these extremely scarce etchings.

Vogtherr (1490-1556) probably trained in Augsburg with Hans Burgkmair I. Beginning in 1536, he ran a printing business is Strasburg publishing medical texts and, in 1537, pattern books with designs for artists. During the 1540s he was probably back in Augsburg, where his son lived also and is listed as an artist (from 1541 to 1554), and where he produced this book of etchings with Hans Burgkmair's son. By the late 1540s, Vogtherr had returned to Strasburg and in 1550 became court painter to Charles V in Vienna.

There is another set of these etchings in the British Museum. However, we have not found another set at auction in the past 25 years. Hollstein 3-4.
