first edition. signed by baseball great joe dimaggio with blue marker, on half-title. In The Old Man and the Sea, DiMaggio serves as an inspiration to Santiago as he battles with the marlin. He remembers that DiMaggio's father was a fisherman and recalls the hitter's ability to play baseball despite the pain of a bone spur which mirrors Santiago's own cramped left hand. A total of seven passages referring to DiMaggio appear in the book.
