"Key West," 15 December 1936

Additional Details

"Thank you very much for sending me Mr. Sylvester's letter . . . . I appreciate his . . . excellent intentions toward me and my peacocks but I like Mr. Bishop's article and see no need to be defended from it. We also had peacocks on the farm in Michigan when I was a kid. Am getting almost to the end of a novel and as soon as it is over am going to Spain. I am a writer and I am a Catholic but I am not a Catholic Writer and my politics are not those of the church. Least of all have I ever had any intention of isolating myself from the world in any way or at any time except for a few weeks at a time to get my work done. This . . . is not for publication. . . ."
John Peale Bishop's partly critical article, "Homage to Hemingway," appeared in the November 10, 1936 issue of New Republic.
