ASSIGNING RIGHTS FOR THE 1958 FILM, "THE OLD MAN IN THE SEA" HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. Group of three Typed Documents Signed, each an agreement concerning film rights to The Old Man and the Sea. The first, assigning exclusive motion picture rights to Leland Hayward [producer of the 1958 film], notarized on second page by his attorney, Alfred Rice. The second, confirming April 17, 1953 agreement for literary rights and subsequent amendments. Additionally signed by Hayward. The third, approving the choice of film director (Fred Zinnemann) [later replaced by John Sturges] and various rights and responsibilities relating to the director, producer, author and artists. In the 8th paragraph of the October 17, 1955 agreement, Hemingway has struck out the word "Author" and initialed in the right margin: "Notwithstanding anything contained in any of the underlying agreements hereinabove referred to, Producer, Author, Artist and Director each agree that they will appoint a common agent for the purpose of exercising their respective rights of examination and copying of the books of account . . . ."
