The original design for this engraving, one of a set of three depicting different marital circumstances (the other two are Marriage Based on Wordly Love and Marriage Based on Spiritual Love), was made by Goltzius and engraved by Jan Saenredam around 1595. The images were extremely popular at the turn of the 16th century and frequently copied by contemporaries of Goltzius and Saerendam. cf. Hollstein 108.
