HENDRICK GOLTZIUS
Galatea.

Chiaroscuro woodcut printed in brown and black on cream laid paper, circa 1589-90. 348x258 mm; 13 3/4x10 1/4 inches. Second state (of 3). Three crowns watermar (cf. Briquet 5097). Ex-collection Dr. Albert W. Blum (Lugt supplement 79b, verso). With thread margins or trimmed on the outside of the black border line, with additions in pale brown wash (perhaps to simulate a third tone block). A very good impression of this extremely scarce color woodcut.

We have found only 8 other impressions at auction in the past 25 years. Bartsch 235; Hollstein 368; Bialler 28.
