HENRI-ALEXANDRE-GEORGES REGNAULT
(Paris 1843-1871 Buzenval)
Judith and Holfernes.

Black chalk on cream laid paper. 285x220 mm; 11 1/4x8 3/4 inches.

Regnault won the coveted Prix de Rome in 1866 and spent the latter part of his short career in Italy and Spain. He drew most of his character types from the everyday people he saw in these places, such is the case with the model for his painting of Salomé, 1870, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, or that of Judith in the current work. Reganult was killed in battle at Buzenval during the Franco-Prussian war.
