HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) DIVAN JAPONAIS. 1893.
311/2x231/2 inches. Edw. Ancourt, Paris.
Condition C+: repaired tears and restoration in margins, chalk in image; glued to board; top right corner has been detached.
Two patrons are attending a performance, right behind the orchestra pit, in this small Parisian cafe concert. "It is not the star who draws the attention here--the singer Yvette Guilbert...is up in the top left-hand corner, with her head cut off by the top of the sheet" (Adriani p. 32). In actuality, however, the patrons are celebrities themselves; Jane Avril (who, as a performer was the subject of a later Lautrec poster) and the literary critic Edouard Dujardin. By this, Lautrec's fifth poster, he had already established himself as a master of the young medium. See also lot 168. Maitres pl. 2, Weill p. 47, DFP II 824, , Delteil 341, Wine Spectator p. 49.
