HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) LES VIEILLES HISTOIRES. 1893.
18 1/4x22 3/4 inches, 58x36 cm.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image.
The lithographic cover for a collection of song titles based on poems by Jean Goudezki, set to music by Désiré Dihau. Dihau was a distant cousin for whom Lautrec designed twenty six sheet music covers. "Here we see him [Dihau] leading a bear along the auspicious route to the Institut de France which is dimly perceived in the background . . . the bear being led by the nose is a satire on the poet Jean Goudezki" (Adriani p. 59). Lautrec also, inexplicably (but much to the interest and delight of early aviation enthusiasts), depicts a balloon in the sky over Paris. Wittrock 5, Delteil 18, Adriani 27 II.
