HENRI GABRIEL IBELS (1867-1936) YVETTE GUILBERT. 1894.
24 1/2x19 inches. Charles Verneau, Paris.
Condition A-: minor loss at bottom edge; vertical and horizontal folds.
La Bodiniere was the exhibition hall of the Theâtre d' Application. It was founded at the end of the 1890s by Charles Bodinier, who had been general secretary of the prestigious Comedie Francaise. A combination of a small theatre and exhibition gallery, the space quickly became a meeting place for Paris' young, avant-garde artistic community. This poster is an excellent historical document that highlights just how important and influential an artistic spot La Bodiniere was. The poster advertises a one-day appearance by Yvette Guilbert, who was performing in the theatre, during an exhibition of works by Ibels in the gallery. As the event was only for a single day, budgetary restrictions kept the poster in black and white. Bodinier, who was a big supporter of poster artists, always used the exceptional lithographic talents of Charles Verneau to print his posters. DFP-I 474, Reims 755.
