"Gustave Jossot [was] virulently anti-clerical, he was also a gadfly of the bourgeois, and in his art he employed a thick outline and glaring colors which made his posters 'howl on the walls' . . . [his image is] powerful and effective for Sardiens Amieux, with their bizarre ragpicker . . . he is the only French poster artist who can be called expressionistic" (Weill p. 46).
