Evenepoel was a talented and promising young Belgian artist who moved to Paris. His ability was recognized by Deschamps, who commissioned him to design a poster for the Salon des Cent and by Piazza, who commissioned Evenepoel to design a print for L'Estampe Moderne. This early poster, made when he was 22, was designed for the city of Antwerp. However they found the image too daring, and it was eventually published by Le Diable au Corps [The Very Devil], a Belgian Cabaret similar to Paris' Chat Noir. "It gets its dynamic effects from a skillful composition, depicting the national colors (black, yellow and red) and those of the city (red and white)." (Yolande Oostens-Wittamer / L'Affiche 1900 / Brussels, Bibliotheque Royale, 1975. P. 61) Evenepoel died at the age of 27. Maitres pl. 116.
