The Forest of Tronçais is a massive (26,000 acres) national forest in the center of France. The oaks of Tronçais are prized for the barrels coopered for cognac and the great wines of Bordeaux. The forest was also a frequent subject of the Barbizon school painters, among them Harpignies (1819-1916) and his close friend Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot.
