With the purchase of Maserati in 1968, Citroën worked on developing a highly individualistic sports coupe that combined Maserati's engine power with the Citroën suspension system. In 1972, Citroën launched the SM model that was considered to be one of the best cars in the world at the time, and the first non-American car to be elected Motor Trend's Car of the Year. Here, Henri Martin showcases the futuristic profile of this mythical car, setting it against a black background. Designed by Citroën's chief designer Robert Opron, who had originally worked on aircraft body design, the SM has a streamlined and aerodynamic shape that was clearly influenced by this experience. With angular forms and a clear art deco influence, critics marveled at the SM's style, efficiency and speed.
